The Break

The cycle of poverty, crime and tragedy that haunts many Indegenous families is something of which I understand very little. The Break tells the story of one such family as its members struggle to survive in a society that doesn't offer them much.

The book made me think about how different my lot was growing up compared to the kids in the book, and why my situation was so different.

There were a lot of characters, however; I struggled remembering who was who, especially in the first half of the book where the plot was rather slow. The story really picked up its pace in the second half, however, and so I'm glad I kept reading.

If you want to learn more about the Metis/Indigenous culture, I highly recommend the book.
