Following the French Revolution, Napoleon sought to conquer more lands. But fans of the French monarchy would not go quietly. From England and elsewhere, they plotted to have France's leader assassinated so that another Louis could be crowned in his stead. This was the backdrop behind the novel The Eagle and the Viper
I love the genre of historical fiction because it helps me understand the past like non-fiction cannot. The times were violent, as the population had revolution on its mind, while the government sought to protect itself.
The book was good, but I feel like it could have used more historical context. If you're looking for a novel taking place during this time in France, I strongly recommend The Scarlett Pimpernel instead.
