Russian citizens seemed to be struggling against two enemies in World War II. Most obviously, the Nazis. But also their own government. City of Thieves: A Novel is a fantastic book that puts the reader in the shoes of those who (barely) lived through it.
The Nazis have surrounded the city, cutting off access to food for the citizenry. But somehow party officials are doing just fine, continuing to enjoy a decadent lifestyle. A couple of ordinary guys try to navigate these dire circumstances, and it's an entertaining tale that I highly recommend.
