I almost put The Shithead down halfway through.
The protagonist is a struggling small business owner, husband, and father who spirals through lies, self-deception, mounting debt, and a Faustian bargain that promises to solve everything. There were stretches where I thought, “Do I really need to watch this man unravel any further?”
While I’m not sure I learned a whole lot, the book left a lingering aftertaste. It’s literary fiction that nails the psychological cost of the entrepreneurial grind. If you’ve ever run a business (or thought about it), parts of Eric’s spiral will feel uncomfortably familiar. But it’s dark, messy, and at times meandering.
