This is the third book I've read from Abir Mukherjee because I enjoyed the first two so much. This one is probably the best so far, as readers are introduced to an India that is now much more under the influence of Gandhi than in the previous ones.
A wave of resignations, work stoppages and strikes have scared the British occupiers. While the Indian leaders promote peace, the populace can't be controlled so easily. The environment is ripe for terrorist attacks.
It is amidst this backdrop that once again our protagonist must solve a series of murders. The suspense and the education the reader gets of this special time and place in history make Smoke and Ashes another worthwhile read.
